翻译:《The Merchant Crossing the River》

Once upon a time, there was a merchant who, driven by profit, carried a heavy load of goods to the riverbank, intending to cross to the other side where the market awaited. Surveying the boats, he planned to ferry his goods across. With his numerous goods, he worried about finding transport. Just then, an old boatman leaning on the mast chuckled and said, "Sir merchant, do you wish to cross? My boat can carry you." The merchant was delighted and inquired about the fare, but upon hearing it, his face soured, saying, "This price is too high; I cannot afford it." The boatman smiled and shook his head, continuing, "How can one value safety lightly and, in greed for small gains, forget the greater peril?"

Unheeding the advice, the merchant withdrew to seek another way. Soon, he spotted a flimsy, small boat whose owner tempted him with a low fee. Rejoicing, the merchant disregarded the boat's frailty and hastily loaded his goods, setting sail with haste. But within a few dozen steps, winds rose and waves surged, capsizing the small boat. His goods sank, and the merchant himself narrowly escaped death, saved by a passing vessel.

Returning drenched and ashamed, the merchant went back to the old boatman, willing now to pay the original fare. The boatman smiled and said, "Your goods are lost; regret comes too late. Everything in this world has its worth. To be greedy for trifles and lose sight of greater things is not the path of wisdom."

This tale illustrates the importance of valuing quality and safety over immediate savings, reminding us that shortsighted decisions can lead to significant losses.
