His goods sank, and the merchant himself narrowly escaped death, saved by a passing vessel.

Returning drenched and ashamed, the merchant went back to the old boatman, willing now to pay the original fare. The boatman smiled and said, "Your goods are lost; regret comes too late. Everything in this world has its worth. To be greedy for trifles and lose sight of greater things is not the path of wisdom."
